Driver - Review
|
Driver is one of my favorite wicked car racing games. Too bad there aren't that many tracks, this is the reason why I want recommend to play Driver in the Undercover game mode.
My first of impression of Driver, there are some great tracks available. When you select a practice race, you don't have an objective to complete during the race, it's just drive trough all the traffic, get the police behind you and try to slide trough turns, drive as fast as you can and make stunts as wicked as possible but in the end the police will always catch you because you can't loose them. However the practice mode isn't recommended because when you play all the tracks for a while, it gets boring.
The graphics are looking great, Driver support high Direct3D graphics in 16 and 32 bit mode and that in a resolution up to 1600x1200 pixels, which is extremely high for a game like this. There is a nice flashy effect on each car, which let the cars look very realistic. When it's night, the lights of the cars and the dark scenery around you look very realistic. The cars are very nice detailed so is the road and the scenery. Some scenery is blurred up sometimes, but you won't mention it too much when you are driving around.
The gameplay is okay. Each car has its own special handling and top speed. Some cars drive very fast but when you hold the right button for not even a second the car is swirling on the road. Some stuff in Driver is not very realistic, for example when a car is close to completely broke, if you drive into it (and not even fast), it flies sky high and it will not return. Another example, the police will bump you long enough until you your car is broken, they don't even try to stop you they just try to mess up your lovely car. This makes it possible to play on and on in cheat mode.
Another little unrealistic thing that doesn't make this game violent is that the people on the side of the road just walk normally but when you want to drive them over, the run very fast, even faster than your car, to another location but that's not a real point for most gamers because Driver isn't Carmageddon but it's not very realistic of course, but it's fun to see that for a while. For the rest some parts of the track look quite the same because when you're in the middle of the city, most roads look the same so it gets boring after a while too. But don't think that this game is very boring because Driver is quiet nice.
The main good thing about this game is the Undercover and the story game mode. You've to complete missions for your boss so you earn big money and unlock cities. During your missions lots of good cut scenes will show up just to keep you up to date with what's going on. The Undercover mode also contains a few practice laps to improve your driving skills. Practicing your ability for fast turns in high speeds etc. The difficulty of the missions is very nice, every level gets harder and harder. But it depends on your own driving skills because Driver can be very easy too when you are patient enough, but most of us aren't so in that case Driver is hard sometimes.
Overall this is a quite nice game. I would like to recommend it for any racing game fan, this game really belongs to your collection. If you like to ignore all rules, and don't do it in your real life, this game is worth a shot for sure!
