During a time where point and click adventure games were the standard, Lucas Arts really did it best. Between Lucas Arts and Sierra there were many games during this era, and to keep themselves fresh new characters were constantly being created, and even then things started to get stale. The genre was still useful however, and many people did not want to see it die...

And then Sam & Max showed up, a couple of renegade detectives that consisted of a dog and his homicidal rabbit sidekick. I think that's all that I really need to say. Without going too far into the storyline, the gameplay is simply fantastic and smart... the comedy can seem rather lowclass at first, but it's really more of a parody than anything. And let me just add that using your lil' buddy as a pseudo-item was rather awesome as well.

Sam and Max was rather groundbreaking, even warrenting a television series at one point (although like most great cartoons, it didn't last all that long) and more recently than that, rumors of a new game that didn't go through. Most likely due to the fact of its cult status, which can work in bringing back television shows but a game is a single game, and it doesn't get a chance every week to bring in new fans.

All in all, I would have to put Sam & Max in the upper echelon of point and click gaming, although perhaps not with Mr. Threepwood and the Tentacles.
