Game review

Man, nostalgia is what really pushed me to find this game. It was one of the first 3D racing games I played for Windows. The game was designed to take advantage of Pentium processors with MMX technology, and for a game that ran flawlessly on a Pentium 1, it has pretty decent graphics.
The basis of the game is due to a virus outbreak on a recently colonized planet Io, you are one of the last people stuck on the planet doomed for destruction (POD stands for Planet of Death). Using parts from factories that have been shut down, you soup up your car to race on the deserted streets of the once populous Io. It's not a race for fame or fortune. It's a race for your life. There is one ship left to get off the planet before it's destroyed. The winner of the championship gets the ship. The rest... Well, let's say we won't be hearing from them again.
You race on a variety of sci-fi inspired tracks with futuristic looking cars. I don't know how else to explain it. Some cars are small...some look like the person just put wheels on the factory. Each car comes with unique attributes, and you are able to change those in the settings, as well as take the car for a test drive before deciding to enter it in the race.
The AI is agressive, almost too agressive. They will cut you off, ram you into walls, try to spin you out...It's a wild ride. However, there are shortcuts and alternate paths in the tracks. If you play it right, you can get out in front with little confrontation with your...friends.
There's a good sense of speed in this game. Going downhill, you can feel yourself accelerate...and going uphill, you're grinding your teeth as your car slows down and the other racers inch toward you. If you take a turn too tight, you'll slow down. If you graze a wall, you'll slow down. As far as I'm concerned, collision detection is perfect. All this adds a sense of realism to the game, and forces you to drive fast without making mistakes. In fact, most side paths are inaccessible unless you're moving at a high enough rate of speed to make a jump.
Overall, if you like racing games that aren't all about driving in circles a few hundred times, and you're intrigued by sci-fi environments, certainly give this game a shot. For those of you who are nostalgia freaks like me and remember this game from your past, the game's still good. It's not one of those "I remember this game being better than this" games. With the tools I used to get the game running, I feel it looks better than ever!
