Game review

I'm glad I found this game. It really was a great game that was under the radar. Games like Need For Speed and Test Drive were piling in every year, and they were the ones that typically got the awards. IGN, however, caught this game before it slipped away and ultimately awarded it 1998 Racing Game of the Year. The runner up was Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit.
I feel Powerslide was deserving of the reward. The physics are excellent for a game of its time, and the graphics are just mind-blowing. Most racing games didn't push those kinds of visuals until a few years later.
The plot is something like you're a survivor of the apocalypse of Earth, and you need to race for a chance to get off the planet or something....isn't that the plot to POD? Anyways...another cheesy plot. Plot doesn't matter in a racing game.
The main thrill of the game is drifting. Yes, Drifting! You don't get style points like NFS: Underground, but it does feel quite rewarding to take a shallow entrance to a hairpin, and hit thehandbrake which pulls your "car" (They're not very car-like...kinda like dune buggies) sideways around the turn. More fun comes from figuring out which brake to use for which turn... Or to hit a jump into a turn, where you have to hit the jump at an angle so you land semi-sideways to slide out the turn.
As you progress through the Single Player Championship mode, you unlock new tracks, characters (changes car colors), and cheats(?). Well, unlocking the cheat doesn't explicitly tell you how touse it. At the time, you'd consult the manual, but nowadays, you can find all the codes to activate the cheats on gamefaqs.com. The only problem with cheats is activating them will prevent game progress. If you win a championship by cheating, you will not be rewarded.
The game has a diverse and interesting soundtrack, from music with middle-eastern to far-easterninfluence to European house techno to industrial rock. No chart-toppers, but decent racing music, which adds to the atmosphere of the track you're on.
So, whether you're bounding over sand dunes, running up the wall of a dam, hopping floors of ruined office buildings and sliding down stairs, or going all topsy-turvy in a pipe, this game is fairly sure to please the arcade racing enthusiast.

@Schmatzler Try downloading D3D 9 and reinstall the game. It runs natively in Windows XP.

Now I switched to XP from 98SE and I noticed, that the game will not work. Even with patches.
Hopefully wine can handle it on Linux. |

This game really rocks! The graphics are nice and it plays well on my old Thinkpad with full details on
Even has Force Feedback support and I love the good opponents. The only thing that really sucks is the championship, if you fail one track you have to begin at the very first point - and otherwise not all tracks will be unlocked. Some more trys would have been much better there. Anyway, I like it! |

I see there have been a few downloads of this game already. I'd like to know what you all think of the game. Don't worry, if you think it sucks, you won't hurt my feelings.
