LIERO – well balanced, entertaining 2-player worm combat game
Liero is an excellent game. It rewards timing and finger speed, precision and creativity. The basic design premise seems to have been to create a real-time version of Worms. Some of the humour of that game is reproduced, particularly in the range of weapons (not to mention the notion of murderous and heavily armed earthworms carrying extensible ninja-ropes), and the basic aim is much the same; that is, to blow your opponent to pieces.
Liero can be played by two human players (split screen, on the same keyboard) or against the computer. The AI of the computer player is spectacularly bad, though, so the only real challenge in playing against it is in trying to kill it before it kills itself. A match between two human players is a different matter entirely, however, especially if the two players are evenly matched, so in this review I’ll concentrate on this form of the game.
There are four game types to choose from: Kill ‘em All, Capture the Flag, Simple CTF and Game of Tag. Once the game type has been chosen each player selects five weapons, from a list of about forty. Weapons also spawn randomly in the environment from time to time, so your initial choice is not necessarily fixed for the entire game. The range of weapons is wide. My personal favourites are the Chiquita Bomb (scatters explosive bananas in all directions), Spikeballs (lob a handful of spiky metal things in your opponent’s face), Rifle (long range single shot gun with laser sight) and the Super Shotgun (devastating at close range). Different weapons have different strengths of course, so it’s important always to have a balanced set containing bombs, long range and close range weapons. The different weapons also have different reloading times, so even the less powerful weapons can be effective. The loading times of all weapons can be scaled though, which dramatically alters the pace of the game. Setting the loading times at 9999% (the longest possible) effectively makes the weapons good for only one shot. Setting them down to 0% allows you to fire any weapon continuously. 100% is average.
Movement is accomplished in two ways – by digging or by the ninja rope. Digging is easy; hold down the key of the direction in which you want to dig, and tap the opposite direction. Don’t ask where the earth goes to. Using the ninja rope takes some skill, but mastering it is vital, and satisfying too. If your opponent lands a Cluster Bomb at your tail, for instance, the only way to escape quickly enough will be to stick the ninja rope onto the dirt above you and swing to safety. Hanging from it also causes you to bob and swing about, making it more difficult for your opponent to shoot you.
The physics is fairly realistic. Projectile weapons cause recoil, and explosions send worms flying. Blood arcs from dismembered worm parts, coating the ground. The physics of the ninja rope is particularly notable. Liero also comes with a simple level editor.
I recommend Liero to any pair of gamers who enjoys a simple, fast-paced action game. Apart from the obvious fault, the computer player AI, which makes single-player games absurd, there are very few improvements that could be made. Fan-made modifications are quite numerous, though, and include different weapons and custom levels.

Toss a bomb at your next-door neighbour and watch him go boom.
