Micro Machines the game! This is based, obviously, on the small toy cars of the same name. I used to play with Micro Machine cars when I was younger, as I'm sure most boys did, and now its time to play the game!
This is a really different game, it's a racer with a twist. Instead of the traditional 'race faster than your opponent in a serious manner and win', this games plot seems to be 'have fun and win', with a really wacky baseline, and a humorous feel, this game has done really well. The game play is very fun and challenging, don't think that games with humor are easy, trust me this isn't, especially in team games. I got shown this by the computer unfortunately, after a winning spree of about 4 levels, I got trashed about 6 times on this one level. The only bad thing about this is if you loose a level you have to keep playing it until you can win. Some people might see this as good as 'practice makes perfect', others (such as me), as 'if your rubbish at a level why do you want to keep playing it', if you know what I mean.
The key about this game, that makes it unique in its genre (which is racing I guess), is that it is not to be taken too seriously. I mean how can you compare this game, that is just a friendly game to play with others for fun, to a game such as 'F1 Grand Prix', where you are meant to take everything serious, and to loose is to die! I like games like that as I always picture myself as the real driver, and my mind makes up its own little scenario of the situation (I'm crazy I know), but Micro Machines allows me to just sit back and relax. There are multiple drivers in the game that you can choose from, to both race as and race with/against. There are also quite a few racing options in the menu, suck as 'head to head' where you can play one on one vs a friend or the machine, 'team race' where you can play a group of friends, or yourself in a challenge against a bunch of machine based players.
The game throughout is based downwards, what I mean is that its viewable only from the birds-eye view. If you STILL don't know what I'm talking about, it's like games such as 'G.T.A' where you are looking from up above, and can see down on the game, such as the tops of cars and people´s heads, etc. If you STILL don't know what I'm talking about... then bah! The actual levels have been made with a unique thought in mind, instead of a boring racing track all the time, Micro Machines is set in various rooms in the house! One minute you could be dodging pens and books in the bedroom, to sliding over soap and oil in the kitchen, very amusing! To win the various stages you aim is simple. You have to either win each lap, or be the one closest to the front of the race, blacking out the last racers, as the game is based on a moving screen. If your not fast enough to stay on the screen, then out you go. Each time you win like this in a 'Head to Head' game, there are a group of about 10 balls, one of them changes into your car's color. The first racer with the most amount of their own color wins!
Like I said before, don't be fooled, this is anyone´s game, you can be the best racer in the world as still loose! Away from that for the moment though, lets go to graphics. The visuals aren´t much in the way that it doesn't really pressure the SNES to the most of it's abilities, but they are quite fun, and make up in humor, where visuals lack. The in game race doesn't feature any music, but sound effects, although the menu has some nice little groovy beats. basically its a fun game, with a relaxed attitude, a bit like 'Super Mario Kart' but slightly less serious.
