Story
I don’t go that deep into the story so I redirect you to the Wikipedia link, stated in the information about the game. That link gives you a great insight about the story.
Weaponry
Of course, you can’t save the earth without some cool weapons. Compared to other games, the weapons are not really original: you have your standard gun, shotgun, automatic, rocket launchers and granade launchers. The strongest weapon of th egame is the Rail Gun which you will get later in the game. Ammo for this gun is scarce and you really need to look for this ammo. Oh yeah, and don’t worry about getting out of ammo: you won’t: on every corner there is ammo to be found. Later on in the game, there is lesser ammo to be found so concerve as much as possible!
Spells
If you do run out of ammo, then that is not a problem. Come on! You’re an Angel (no not you)! You must have some sort of power! And you have: the power to shot lightnin bolts and fireballs, bullettime, the power to cast a thunder spell, to heal an ally, to heal yourself, to resurrect an enemy and join your side. There are so many spells in this game: of course, you do not start with all of these spells at once.
You cannot cast spells constantly: you need to rest once in a while to regain your spell-power. Every spell has it’s own powerdrainage. Heal will cost 50, while an electric shock cost 12 and Possession a whopping 120! It’s up to you how you use this power!
Levels and graphics
The levels are all really pretty designed. The atmosphere is set in some sort of industrial setting around the mid 22nd century. As usual, you get to visit office buildings, power plants and a space ship. We’ve all seen this before but not with these graphics. The graphics are all really nice and the character models are great to set eyes upon.
As for the first level: wow! You begin the game in the space between heaven and hell although it really looks like hell. People trapped in walls and whispering your name: some of them are crying. It’s really sickening to see but it sets a nice atmosphere to the whole game! Don’t worry though: not the whole game is like this - only the first level.
Aim of the game
Every level has its objective: ‘Get to point A’ or ‘Meet up with person B’ or ‘Escape from location C’. Not really original and really linear. But then again: wasn’t every FPS back then (don’t bring up Half-Life now)?
Hint: at some time in the game you’ll get the objective to find Aaron: he’s hard to find and if you don’t meet up with him in the Resistance Base, then you will see this objective throughout the game, which can be very confusing! And he will give you a sweet power: bullettime! So don’t miss him!
Conclusion
Although I had a lot of fun with this game: it lacks originality. The story fades a little bit to the background while playing. Later on it will get you by the throat once again because a nice twist of plot. Overall, this is a really good game for its time. Like Clive Barker’s Undying, this is again one of those games, that is really underestimated by the public. And that’s a pity because there weren’t really great FPS games in that time of release. Give it a try! You won’t be disappointed.
