Game review
|
This is a first person shooter released by Acclaim in the year 1996, a DOS game, could better be released as a Windows platform game, or adapted to windows. But this is not the case, Acclaim decided to bring it as DOS game. That means they were stuck on 640X480 screen sizes, 256 colors and no real D3D drawings nor acceleration. This was not an intelligible decision, everybody (or almost anyway) knows Doom, but not many of us know Alien Trilogy, that is really a shame because the game certainly has merits. Slightly based upon the Alien movie, it surely gives a claustrophobic effect, is frightening and pretty hard to play. The game is meant to be dark, and dark it is, but never so dark you can not see what you are doing, or what is jumping at your face.
The alien creatures aren´t half as fast as in the movie, but are a pain to kill, and the weaponry you are carrying has a constantly hunger for ammunition. The rounds deplete faster than you can replace them, searching and scouting for ammo will be one of your main goals in this game, also for power-ups and health boosters.
Luckily you have as standard equipment `the alien radar´, it´s constantly beeping and flashing to warn you, it seems that this radar is the twin of the one used in the movie, always a bit too late, and pretty worthless, it is a small help, nothing more, mediocre efficacy for a high-tech scanner. Unable to scan through closed doors, it´s a disgusting piece of junk, but very appropriate to work the whole time on your nerves. It gives an extra dimension to the game, keeping you on the edge, always ready to shoot or run away. Be careful not to squint too much on this scanner, you could end squint-eyed.
Also the fact that game was never meant to be a funny game shows from the weaponry. Not that you lack weaponry, you get it all from the beginning, you don´t have to search for the heavy weaponry, but...no ammunition. It is a frustrating experience to carry a shotgun, flamethrower, pulse rifle, smart gun, name it and you have it, but hell, no ammo! All you get are a miserable 45 rounds for your 9 mm automatic pistol. And you will need the ammo, every round you can find, as said before the alien creatures are hard to kill. And they don´t wait to get shot by you; they jump at your face without mercy, certainly the crawling kind. The lovely grownups aren´t very fast, but they can take more than one good aimed shot before they lay down.
The gameplay itself is kind repetitive, but not boring. You get a mission at the beginning of every level, clear this up, destroy that...but it isn´t boring. You have about 35 levels to fight through, action enough to keep you busy for a whole while. The puzzles aren´t meant to give you a hard time, mostly searching thorough a level will solve them. The main goal is action while destroying the alien fauna. Have a good hunting party, and be careful...

The German release removes cyborgs and human enemies. They are replaced by standard aliens.
