Introduction
So, you are driving down the highway and you notice a black Monte Carlo on your bumper. No big deal, right? Then he gives you a little tap. "What the eggplant is wrong with that excrement-for-brains?" you think. Now he pulls up on your right flank and nudges you, causing you to spin into the concrete barrier (this game was made before the S.A.F.E.R. barrier) and ruin your car, not to mention your day. On ordinary roads, this is craziness. However, this is everyday stuff when you are playing Nascar Racing II!
Gameplay
This game is a simulation with the option to do arcade type races. However, it is still a hard-edged, bare-knuckles, kick-yer-butt simulation. If you don´t have a wheel, joystick or pad with analog stick(s), don´t bother. The cars are difficult to drive and the learning curve is steep, just like in the real deal. You can change the tuning and setup of the car down to the littlest detail but if you don´t know what you are doing, it´s just like turning wrenches on your own car with no knowledge. Thankfully, there are some pre-installed car setups for each track. Most of the tracks are ovals and some are easier to drive than others depending on banking, road surface, turn radius, etc. The two road courses show just how skilled you must be to drive one of these cars. Leave those ones until a little later on. You can change the weather, turn damage on and off, and do modem multiplayer if you please. One of the best features of this game is the paint shop. You paint your car however you want to, and you chose your crew´s uniform color scheme. I love it.
Graphics
The graphics are polygonal and really pretty decent, especially for 1995. They are definitely on par with Papyrus´ other simulations. The colors work well and the menu screen is neato. You can run it in VGA or SVGA and you can run it full bore on garage sale hardware. Well done.
Sound
The sound is again on par with the rest of the Papyrus catalogue. The digitized engine sounds match the real deal pretty closely. If you are running XP, VDM is an absolute must.
Value
This game is an excellent value on its own, but it gets even better if you consider all of the user-made carsets, tracks and other modifications that continue to come out. You can keep playing this game for years and years with out repetition.
Verdict
At less than 20mb, this is an obvious must for any serious racing fan, however, this is not a game for beginners. If you don´t like the idea of having to spend a few hours really learning how to drive, then don´t bother. This is a Papyrus Simulation.

Can anyone help me?
I can't get this game to run in DosBox. Whenever I try to get it to work, it says: "Unable to find nascar2.exe in ' '." I've searched around, but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you. |
