A venomous evil. A desperate victim. A man alone in the dark.

AITD 2 is very different from its predecessor. Some might not accept the changes, but I know I did. And I enjoyed every minute of it.

The game once again puts us in the shoes of Edward Carnby, a private detective with a special love for supernatural cases. This time Carnby enters Hell's Kitchen, an ominous manor, to investigate the death of his friend Stryker and to save a young girl, Grace Saunders, from the clutches of an undead gang of bootleggers, led by the evil One-Eyed Jack. From that point onward he confronts vicious pirates and gangsters, devious traps, and voodoo magic.
The game uses the same dated engine of AITD 1, though there are many new neat effects and the movement of the characters is very realistic (for example, the game's intro, which features Stryker infiltrating into Hell's Kitchen, or some of the voodoo induced levitation effects.).

While AITD 1 has focused in elements of adventure games, AITD 2 revolves around action. Not to say it has little to no puzzles, but action is much more prominent. There are many enemies in Hell's Kitchen and its surroundings, they are significantly stronger and more durable than the undead servants of AITD 1, and they're heavily armed. As a result, the game is quite difficult, possibly the most difficult of the original trilogy.

The focus around action has also affected other areas of this game. The story, unlike that of AITD 1, rarely evolves and most of the time there is little tension. The fact enemies are mostly human, unlike the otherworldly horros of AITD 1, reduces the fear of the game's atmosphere. Also, some of the puzzles aren't very logical and even the development team has trouble explaining them. Even in the official walkthrough of the game, which is designed as Carnby's records of his adventure , Carnby recalls: "Don't ask me why, but I had the sudden urge to..."
BUT... What the game lacks in depth, it makes up for in several other areas.

First of all, some of your enemies have richly detailed background stories, which makes meeting them slightly more interesting. In addition, there are more music tracks to keep you entertained. And most importantly, there are times when you get to play young Grace Saunders herself. Unlike Carnby, Grace can't fight and therefore she has to avoid danger and rely on her wits.

You won't like AITD 2 if you fear action. And you might not like its lack of depth. But beyond those and the dated engine the AITD series features, lies a fun, unique and well-crafted game.
