To gain a sense of what Midtown is all about, imagine having the ability to drive someone else's car through a major city during rush hour traffic as fast as you want with reckless abandon and no fear of monetary loss, injury or death. This is the essence of Midtown. With 10 real-world cars that include the anniversary 1998 Ford Mustang GT and the newly designed Volkswagen Beetle, your setting is the windy city of Chicago. Not only are the cars realistically modeled, so are the city and driving conditions.
Immersion is a key feature in this title, and Angel Studios has done an excellent job of putting you in the heart of Chi-town. Noticeable landmarks include Wrigley and Soldier Field, the Sears Tower, the Shedd Aquarium, Meigs Field, China Town, the John Hancock Center and the Chicago Art Institute. The realism matrix continues with real-time traffic modeling -- you can count on 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. rush hour traffic. This is where Midtown separates itself from all other racing titles and becomes something that appeals to everyone who enjoys computer gaming. I've never played a game with so much happening in the background that is not dependant on the player. Everything you'd expect to find in real city is here, from busses running their routes to delivery trucks making their stops. Stop lights and signs are abundant, and computer-controlled cars obey traffic laws, including stopping when appropriate and signaling for lane changes.
Midtown includes a variety of single-player races as well as a multiplayer mode. But whether it's checkpoint or blitz style racing, the goal is always the same: complete the objectives at all costs. Herein lies the beauty of this title. As a racer, you are not restricted in any way. The "do anything it takes to win" philosophy is paramount to a player's success and vital to his or her survival. The most prominent gameplay type is checkpoint racing, which requires the racer to go through a varying number of checkpoints before crossing the finish line. However, unlike most racing games, the order in which you do this doesn't matter.
The 50-plus races included are varied enough that sometimes you'll swear you've moved to a different city. Chicago takes on a decidedly different feel when real-time weather effects, such as rain and snow, come into play, as well as morning, noon, dusk and nighttime racing. Another nice effect is the damage model; almost every object in the game is breakable, including other cars, traffic lights, parking meters, street lights and garbage cans. You can even drive through the downtown mall. About the only things other than the buildings that aren't destructible are the lift posts for the L-Trains; those things will bust just about any radiator.
