Back in the dark ages when the 286 ruled the earth, sierra released this gem. Not only was it challenging, it also had great attention to detail and everything followed proper procedure. If you want to arrest someone but forgot to read them their rights, they got off and you lost, if you didn't get backup before confronting a pimp, you'd get capped. Even forgetting to walk around the car and inspect it could get you killed. I wonder how many kids who were thinking of becoming cops played this game and got put off after realising how much procedure there was involved. But I digress, what can I tell you about the game?

Gameplay
Well as I told you already, gameplay is pretty realistic. You have to follow police procedure or else get killed. Call for backup, search suspects, file evidence, do research, load your gun, take a shower and so on. The frustrating thing about it all is that you have type all the commands in as this game is text based, (the wonders of maniac mansions point and clic interface was yet to hit sierra) so sometimes it can be a real pain trying to find exactly the right word they're looking for. Maybe keeping a thesaurus nearby isn't a bad idea so you can run through synonyms looking for the right word.
There are two aspects to the gameplay: exploring venues and cruising the streets in your patrol car. The first of these is where most of the action happens and there are many different locations you'll be sent to explore. Bars, hotels, jail, court, park and of course your own police station. The second part is, in my opinion, more fun, as a couple of times while cruising the streets you get to chase suspicious vehicles and pull them over. Just make sure you got your lights on. The general plot of the game revolves around drug dealers and murder but you still have plenty of grunt work to fulfil so you shouldn't find yourself getting bored at all.

Graphics and sound
286 computer, ega graphics cards, need I say more? I haven't seen such big pixels since the days of the spectrum. But they were quite good for the time and so I guess we got to give them some credit. Incidently Sierra did release a vga remake of this game with better graphics, a point and click interface and improved driving system but it doesn't work out as nicely as this version. Maybe it's just me but there was a bit more satisfaction in typing the right thing rather than just click everything with everything and the driving interface is more of a pain than an improvement. Just goes to show you that better graphics are not everything huh?
Sound? if your computer still has it's beeper hooked up, it should handle the sound really well. Warning: the bad music will get stuck in your head so maybe you should turn the sound off if you're going to be playing a while.

Final Thoughts
As a nostalgic person this game brought back many memories. Me trying to find the right word, me getting killed for punching the punk, me looking up naughty words in the computer (you should try it, it's funny), me getting frustrated and me finally feeling elated once I got the bad guys and won the girl (although I think she is actually a hooker). I think this was the first game I ever played where I really felt like I could do anything (within the limits of the games vocabulary of course). Even if there was a strict plot, there was nothing stopping me from going somewhere else and messing around with the people there or thinking up new ways of killing myself. Throw in the good plot and challenge level and you have a game I highly recommend, even though the interface shows it's age. Have fun but don't forget the miranda rights.
