Game review

Short Introduction:
Race with eight different cars through many locations such as a city, a beach, the Alpines, those locations consist of three different parts and gives you the feeling that you really drive to a place, in this case the finish line in the third level, for the rest NFS also contains three circuits. Need For Speed also contains a lot of information about every car, for example information about the cars engine, the history of the car and a shipload of pictures of every vehicle, next to that the "real" NFS game also contains about fifteen videos where you can have a closer look at every car, I have to say every car rocks in this game but my favourite is the Toyota Supra, not because it´s very fast but I simply love that car.
Features:
Like I said before NFS gives you the opportunity to race with eight cars and a bonus car when you win the championship. You are also able to unlock a secret track, you also have to win the championship to do this but of course you can also use cheats to unlock them. The interior of every car looks very realistic so you can really get an impression what a "real life" version of the car in question looks like. For the rest there is also a showcase available, I want to suggest you to take a look at it because it´s very good.
The Graphics:
NFS contains two graphics formats 320x200 and 640x480, this makes it possible to run this game on Pentium 75MHz systems (runs smoothly at 320x200) and Pentium 120MHz systems (runs smoothly at 640x480) or faster systems. I have to say that the graphics are good but they could be better unless it contains a 640x480 screen resolution the graphics are not very good. The tracks are very detailed but there are some stupid bugs in the game for example there are some "hidden" walls when you come a little bit to close through a wall, so always try to drive in the middle of the road.
Music and Sounds:
This is the strongest part of the game; the music is so extremely good that I converted all tracks to MP3´s to be able to listen to them while for example writing a review. You can also download those tracks on our website; I want to suggest you to download some of them especially the Techno tracks. NFS contains two types of music Rock and Techno, you can tell the game what music you want to listen to in the options menu, you can also choose for "both" so when you are a Techno and Rock fan you don´t have to switch constantly.
The Gameplay:
The gameplay is not as good as it could be, for example it´s very hard to brake, so mostly you will smash in a while, thank god that this game doesn´t contain a damage option . The gameplay will improve a little when you use a steering wheel but it will still be very difficult to drive. Try to slow down is very hard but steer to the left and the right is very realistic, you are not able to drive in impossible directions, this is what makes this game a little bit more realistic.
What do you have to do?
What you have to do is first of all choose a car, choose a track and choose what you want (race against an enemy, race against the time or choose for the championship mode). When you did this you can start racing, as in every racing game it´s all about finishing in first position and try to beat the current record time, something which won´t be very easy. When you choose for the championship mode you will also be able to unlock a bonus track and car, I like that.
Conclusion:
Need For Speed is not the best racing games around but it´s worth a try, the graphics are more then acceptable and the music simply rocks. Unless this game contains a lot of stupid bugs it´s enslaving, when I take a look at myself I´m 100% sure that this game is, even these days, very enslaving.

Best game in the series, I hate the new ones, they just don't show the true NFS spirit.

the reason you find it hard to brake is becuase it simulates the actual braking distance of the cars. this game is more like a simulator than arcade. try driving these cars for real and brake when you see a car crossing into your lane and we'll see if you can come back and tell us the story lol. this is by far one of my favourite games around. i have the original disc and found a dos emulator to be able to run it.

This game is ESA protected so we will no longer have it on our site. Please do not post links where it can be downloaded nor ask for it to be emailed to you as those comments will be deleted.
That's the reason there is no download button. |
