Intro
The original Metal Slug was a great game. It boasted rock-solid gameplay and fantastic sound and graphics for its time. What´s more, its over the top carnage and mayhem while sporting a cartoonish look and feel made it one of those games where it´s so silly, it´s cool. Consequently, it only seemed natural to make a sequel to the first game. Rather than applying radical changes to the game, SNK decided to adhere to the old saying, "If it ain´t broke, don´t fix it." Metal Slug 2 looks and plays like the original, but there´s enough new features included in it to where it feels like an entirely new game.
The evil General Morden and his powerful army are up to no good again, and it´s up to you to stop them. The story isn´t exactly groundbreaking, but it´s a great excuse to jump right in and blow stuff up!
Gameplay
Like its predecessor, Metal Slug 2 delivers with the same frenetic fun and even takes it up another notch. The game´s controls are simple and intuitive, allowing you to just start playing without having to worry about any complex, multi-button combos. In the first Metal Slug, Player 1 was stuck with playing as Marko while Player 2 was forced to be fellow tough guy Tarma. Metal Slug 2 allows the player to play not only as either Marko or Tarma, but also two new female characters, Eri and Fio. The differences between the characters are purely cosmetic, but they add more variety and help make the game more lively.
The goal of each level is simple: blast everything that moves while rescuing POW´s along the way. You start out with a pistol that has infinite ammo and ten grenades. Freed prisoners will often give you better guns and grenade refills. You can also grab various animals and food for more points. If you eat too much, you´ll become fat and slow, but your shots will be more powerful. Your enemies mainly consist of Morden´s infantry, tanks and aircraft, but some new foes have been added to the mix this time around, including saber-toting Arabs and exploding subhuman wall-crawlers. Vehicular combat plays a big role in the game. There´s a wider variety of vehicles you can ride in as well, from Harrier jets to walkers. Of course, the good `ol slug tank returns in all its glory as well.
At the end of each level, there´s a huge boss that you have to fight, usually some gargantuan war machine. It can get pretty hectic filling enemies full of lead while frantically dodging their attacks. You´d better dodge them, too; one bullet and you´re dead. This can be frustrating at times, particularly during boss battles, but it provides a good challenging game experience for those of you looking for a harder game out there.
Graphics
If you´ve played the original, then you pretty much know how things look in Metal Slug 2. The classic characters and enemies look the same as in the first Metal Slug, though there are a few new animations for them. Bosses are as imposing as ever, often taking up half the screen. Explosions are a true joy to behold, with superbly animated fireballs and pieces flying in all directions. The character animation is particularly detailed. For example, each of the four playable characters will do a different type of victory animation at the conclusion of a level. The new enemies and environments are made with the same care given to the old ones, making for a visually appealing 16-bit game.
Sound
Once again, the sound isn´t that much different from the first Metal Slug. Many of the same explosions and screams are reused. It still fits in nicely, however. The new sounds given to the new enemies you´ll face help set them apart from Morden´s army. The music usually consists of catchy beats and over the top dramatic scores. The Metal Slug theme is back in all its glory as well. The audio experience as a whole is done very well.
Value
This is a game definitely worth checking out. Even though the game is a bit on the short side, 17 credits isn´t too expensive (besides, you´ll get 'em back before you know it). Even if you beat the game the day you download it, the replay value is phenomenal. The ending is also well worth the credits; you might be genuinely surprised at the "help" you´ll receive!
Overall
Metal Slug 2 is a worthy sequel, picking up the ball from the first game and running like heck with it. For those of you looking for a more laid-back thinking game, I´m afraid you´ll have to look elsewhere. For action fans and retro gamers however, downloading this is a must. This game´s frantically fun action and old school feel will keep you entertained for a long time. The levels somehow never get old, and the surprise ending is brilliant. Whether you´re a Metal Slug veteran or playing for the first time, you´ll probably enjoy this game. It´s worth a shot. Go ahead...download away!

When the right emulator is used (for example MaMe32 or AdvanceMaMe) you can enter the setup of the "arcade-machine" and alter various settings, including whether there should be blood or not and the color of the blood.
