Game review

Clearly we who frequent the glorious celebration of old games that is Classic Gaming Archive are not the only nostalgic ones out there. Game developers seem to be quite fond of their better moments and many games have been updated and revised for newer audiences and better computers. Pitfall is one of those.
About 20 years ago there was a simple game called "Pitfall Harry" that was released for the atari computer system. The main aim of the game was to jump over crocodiles, avoid quicksand, and swing on ropes while collecting all the goodies and finishing in 20 minutes. It was a true classic and so it's only natural that activision should decide ten years later to make an update for the then newly released windows 95 operating system in the hopes it too would become a classic. So, did they succeed?
Gameplay
This new adventure carries on years later when the original "Pitfall Harry" is out exploring with his son, Harry jr. They haven't got very far when Dad is captured by some ancient mayan warrior who clearly has some issues. So it's up to junior to rescue his old man. So he sets out for 14 levels of hunting for his dad. Running, jumping, and swinging his way past leopards, scorpions, snakes and skeletons.
Of course if you are a fan of pure platform fun, you will definitely like this one. There are a few things you have to puzzle out but never more then hit the right spots and swing in the right places. So if you're looking for a mental challenge, this ain't it. Gameplay is fast and furious all the way so the nifty fingered among us are going to do well at this one. I'd give gameplay about an 8, not because it's original but simply because it's fun
Graphics and Sound
This was the first pure windows 95 based game that worked well. Windows has never been known for it's skill in handling games without the help of directx, but activision actually managed to pull it off on this one. Graphics look pretty good despite been framed the whole time in a window. Animations are fluid and don't look like they're a couple of frames short. Colours are rich, even though there are only 256 of them. Drawings are cartoony and fun which suits the game perfectly.
Sound is nothing to right home about. Now great original soundtracks to stir the soul, i'm afraid, but they are by no means inadaquate. So I'd give sounds a 7 and graphics an 8
Overall
Overall this game is great. Although I doubt it will have the same legendary status as it's predecessor, simply because sequels never do, it is well worth a look. Good gameplay, good graphics and the honour of been the first purely windows 95 based game worth remembering.
By the way, the original atari game is tucked away somewhere as one of the bonus levels, just follow the badly drawn scorpions and see how far games moved in about ten years. And if you do get to the end and rescue the dad, you're in for another laugh so there's some inspiration to get playing, if ever I heard one...
