Game review
|
By the larger group of SNES fans, this game was crowned with the 'Best SNES Role Playing Game' title on many occasions. Others might say that Chrono Trigger or Seiken Densetsu 3 was superior, and with good reason, those are impressive games, but I have to agree with the mainstream fanbase. I'm trying to keep this review objective, but it will merely be a list of compliments for such a great title.
Like the earlier Final Fantasy games (and other RPG's, for that matter), the player is in control of a small group of brave heroes, fighting for a noble cause of some sort. A regular fantasy-tale, but in this game, this regular tale is told with so much extensively attention to detail, that it's hard to not start loving it. Every character in your party, (up to 14 different ones!) has its own past, its own tale. One of them is a naive thief, and one of the others a troubled gamer. Some stories are more laid out than others, but you'll have to be ready to follow at least 7 great character stories at the same time. It never gets complicated, but it keeps on amazing. Some characters are optional to get, and their story can be avoided, but there is no reason to do show.
On top of these character-backgrounds, the game has a main storyline. I won't go into much detail, but you can expect an original story about Magic-wielding Espers, the destruction of the world, and the greed of an insane emperor and his right hand, the cruel Kefka, one of the most memorable enemies in videogames to date. Kefka is mean-spirited, without principles, and commits genocide without thinking twice. It won't take long before you'll start hating Kefka in this game. And that hatred just makes it more fun to kick the asses of his pitiful army. Through this main storyline, run several smaller stories. The occupation of a city, the attempts from a resistance faction to stop the evil empire, the history of the world, and more.. Much much more.
The gameplay itself is relatively easy. The battle system is always the tough spot in an RPG, but this one passes the exam with flying colors. It starts out simple, with characters having their own attack-ability, and a little bit of magic, and after a while, you'll find yourself mastering several traits, and learning new magic. It's not the most impressive I've ever seen, you don't have to be a genius to play this game, but it gets the job done just right. Controls are easy to use, not really a surprise on a Nintendo, and the pace is just right, and still, it's customizable.
But there's more. This game promises great graphics, okay sounds and simply beautiful music , and halfway through, right when you're in the mood to let go of the story for a while, the game lets you do just that, to pick up whenever you want. A bold attempt from Squaresoft to keep the player entertained, but it works. And expect to spend some time with this game. If I remember correctly, my first run lasted a hefty 50 hours. It's amazing to see that for today's standards, such a small game can still keep someone glued to the screen for so long.
All in all, there's nothing really getting in the way of having a good time with this game. It's for all ages, and feels like you're reading a good book, or watching a movie. Whether it's the best RPG on the SNES, I'll let you decide for your own. But it's one of the best attempts at the title ever, that's for sure. Even after you've finished it, there's still lots of stuff to do in the game, and lots of secrets to be discovered. If you're new to the series, it's a good one to start out with, you won't have to play its predecessors. Any self-respecting RPG-fan should have this title in its collection, that much is certain.

the PSX version has horrible load times going in and out of battles and i noticed in some areas it even had framerate issues. it does include 3 or 4 cutscenes but they are not shown in-game, and the graphics are no different from the SNES version.
there is a GBA port that includes new dungeons, weapons, items, enemies, and a better translation but without the load times of the PSX version. so if your going to play FFVI, play the original SNES version or the GBA port. the SNES version is going to be harder to find and more expensive though so i recommend the GBA port. |

Heh, this one SNES Rom in my collection of several hundreds. This one was my favourite though. Tales of Phantasia and Chrono Trigger were almost as good.
