Story: 9/10
This one should be very familiar. Bowser, the Koopa King, unleashed a black magic spell and turned the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom to stone. The only one who can break this spell is Princess Peach. However, Bowser also kidnapped her, along with seven Toads (living mushrooms). It is up to Mario and Luigi to defeat Bowser and rescue Princess Peach, who can undo the spell.
Although this story was probably unusual in 1985 (I wouldn't know, as I wasn't alive back then), we're all really used to it now, so it got a high rating.
Gameplay: 8/10
This is the first game with a lot of enemies and items. Yep, it's where Goombas, "? Blocks," Mushrooms and the like originated. The objective of this game is to beat each level, jumping on Goombas, kicking Koopa Troopas, shooting fireballs at Pirahna Plants, and so on. There are Mushrooms to help you, which makes you bigger and gives you an extra hit from an enemy. Then there's the Fire Flower, which allows you to shoot fireballs at most enemies. And there are pipes to enter, which are usually shortcuts. And you will find coins along the way, and 100 of these award you with an extra life. Then you clear each level by touching a flagpole. Of course, almost everybody knows this stuff. The levels' designs are very creative and unique, which adds a lot of variety. One level might be full of Bullet Bills, another might have Scale Lifts, and another might have jumping Cheep-Cheeps. Also, at the end of each world, you have to fight Bowser (or a decoy of him) in a castle to beat it.
So why did I give this an 8? Well, this game can be really frustrating difficult, or too short. The first few times I played this, I kept struggling on each level (except for the first world). Then, eventually, I found this game to be too short -- perhaps one of the shortest Mario games I've played. Well, that's mainly because there are shortcuts. But even without those shortcuts, it's still short -- I beat it in approximately 30-40 minutes.
Also, another annoying thing is that the game only scrolls in one direction -- to the right. This means you can't backtrack. So if you miss a coin, a Fire Flower, or anything like that, you can't get it back. Oh well. This game is still addicting nonetheless.
And do you know what else is annoying? Glitches. Yep, this game is full of them. There's a famous glitch that allows you to go into "World -1", which is commonly called the "Minus World". This is like World 2-2 and 7-2, but the pipe takes you back to the beginning of the level. Then, there's also a glitch where if you touch Bowser and the axe at the end of a castle, and then you get a Fire Flower, you will be small and orange, which is really strange. And there are even worse glitches too. Sometimes, when you find a trampoline in various levels, and you touch it, it disappears and you are stuck. If you try to move, you can't, and you have to wait for time to expire, resulting in an unfair death. Thankfully, it rarely happens. Also, once I was playing World 5-3, and one of the elevators that was supposed to be there had mysteriously disappeared, so I plummeted into another unfair death. And don't get me started on the Scale Lifts in World 4-3... If you can forgive the glitches, like me, then you'll enjoy this game.
Graphics: 6/10
The graphics aren't that great. Nothing looks the way it should. Mario and Luigi have this "blocky" look, and the colors of them are unusual. I've never seen Mario wear brown, nor have I seen Luigi wear white before. Goomba doesn't look accurate; in fact, none of the enemies look accurate. The blocks in overworld/underground levels look strange. Animation isn't that great either. Toad and Peach don't move at all, Mario/Luigi run really strangely, and Koopa shells don't spin as they slide unlike later Mario games. Then again, the game could have been worse, and I like how the colors change between each level (just look at World 6-3!).
Sound: 9/10
Ever play Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins? Well, many of the sound effects in that game are also in this game, such as coins, jumping on enemies, and shooting fireballs. It gets old after a while, but it's an NES game, so it can't do much. But many of the sounds are very familiar, such as getting a Mushroom or getting an extra life. So this deserves a high sound rating.
Oh, yeah, the music! The music in this game is very nostalgic. All the music themes in this game are in many other games too -- so it's very unlikely that you haven't heard it before. Especially the theme on World 1-1. In fact, I've heard all these themes -- yes, all -- before I played this game. And it's likely that you've heard them too.
Control: 6/10
Why a low rating? Well, jumping is really difficult to control in this game compared to later games -- though not as difficult as Mario Bros. When you jump, it's very difficult to turn backwards or even stop (if you were running). So if you jump too far than anticipated then realize to turn back, you're out of luck and lose a life if you fell in a pit. Also, Mario doesn't jump high unless he runs, so you'll need to run a lot.
The rest of the control is a breeze, though. If you've played any other Mario game, you should be able to learn the button setup without anyone telling you or needing an instruction manual (like me). A is jump, B is run and shoot fireballs, Left and Right move in the desired direction, and Down is duck. It doesn't get any easier than that.
Replay Value: 10/10
Did you beat it? Do you think your score is too low? Well, you can keep playing over and over to try to get the high score.
So, overall, this game is a must-download. Fans of the Mario Brothers series MUST download this game and relive the good old days [but, yet again] I was not alive when the game first came out.
I give this game an overall rating of 9/10, that means download this.
