The fourth incarnation of the popular Larry series (yes the fourth, Larry 4 never actually existed) takes an entirely different approach to Larry's life. Because part 4 never actually existed, you find yourself working for the music-business, with no idea how you got there. It's a cheap way to start out an adventure like that, but for some reason, this game gets away with it. Don't worry, Larry 5 is an adventure, just as the parts before it, but instead of roaming around the city with absolute freedom, Larry 5 is carried by storyline much, much more, and instead of walking about clicking here and there, you'll find yourself much busier trying to progress from one part of the story to the other. Opinions vary about this. Some find this an improvement over the older games, but personally, I don't like it. At least, not the way it is done in this particular game. There's just too little freedom to do things in the order you prefer, thus making the game too lineair to fully enjoy it. And that's just a shame, because there's so much potential fun to be had in this game.

With the updated SCI engine, Leisure suit Larry 5 uses a point and click interface, instead of the outdated text parser. A logical improvement, even though some might say that it isn't an improvement at all. It does make the game a hell of a lot easier to control though, and I'd hate to see myself battling the text parser in this game. It also makes room for smooth animations, and some graphical masterpieces. There's more eye-candy in Leisure Suit Larry 5 than you can shake a prudish stick at, and there's lots of buxom ladies to fill your screen in this game. Oh yes, Larry 5 is filled with yet more willing ladies and sexy jokes, and Al Lowe isn't afraid to lay it on thick. As for sounds and music, this part of the series won't disappoint. There are about 15 different digitally synthesized songs in this game, and real life DAC sound effects. A lot of attention was given to this part of the product, and every time you enter a new screen, it shows. Overall, Leisure Suit Larry 5 presents itself marvellously, but the fact that there's no speech in this game, really takes it down a notch. The technology was there, and Sierra had the funds to hire talented actors and actresses for this game, but yet, they didn't. After a while, reading the dialogues becomes a bit tedious, espescially since there's so much fun music and soundeffects, but just no speech, no whipped cream on top. A shame, really.

The puzzles in this game are logical, original, and overall, nothing to complain about. The problem is HOW these puzzles are implemented. Every aspect of every puzzles is shoved in your face, as if the guys at Sierra were afraid you'd miss it. It makes solving the puzzles so much easier, that there's almost no fun to be had. On top of that, you can skip about half of the game, and still finish it with success. There are 1000 points to earn, but you could do with 600, and still the game doesn't object. There is so much extra fun to be had in Leisure Suit Larry 5, but these optional things, are nearly always missed by the player, because you feel pushed in the story, and are too eager to progress. The balance is a bit off, and spoils the fun.

But the story is fun. You get to play both Larry and Passionate Patty again, and both their storylines fit into each other like magic. Patty works for the American govenrment on a secret mission, and Larry gets to interview girls for his double-crossing boss. Two completely different stories, but still they manage to intertwine perfectly, and it shows just how much of a talented write Al Lowe is.

It's such a shame that designers just couldn't make this game of the same quality as it's predecessors. It had the potential for it, but the sloppy work from the quality assurance guys over at Sierra caused us to get a mediocre adventure. Thankfully, they've learned from this, and made Larry 6 like we wanted it to look like. If you're a fan of the series, than you'll need to play this anwyay, if only to see all the girls in their 8-bit goodness again. If you're just looking for a fun adventure game, I suggest you go check out Leisure Suit Larry 1, also available here.
