In Scorched Earth landscapes are generated and a number of tanks (your tanks and your opponent's tanks) are scattered across it randomly. The aim of the game is to blast your opponent's tanks with your tanks until all of your opponent's tanks are dead. Simple.

You fire your guns by selecting your direction and velocity, which can be tricky as they're all done in numbers and must be adjusted using the arrow keys but being an old game the keys are WAY too sensitive and you end up blasting something far off of the screen. Once you get used to them though controlling your aim gets a little easier, but it's still tricky because there's "wind" too, and that again is in numbers and it never tells you exactly what "152" means. Is that 152 out of 200 or 1000? I guess the element of the unknown just adds to the fun.

Probably the best thing about this game are the weapons. After each round you are taken to an armoury and with your prize money from the tanks you shot in the last round you can buy shields, parachutes, batteries and weapons.

You've got a huge choice and my advice is to try everything with the words "death" and "nuke" in them. I highly reccomend the "death nuke". Once fired, a lot of these weapons can blast away every tank on the screen at once (including your own) and though it may not be very sporting it's definately cheap thrills!

The graphics are nothing special, just garish flat colours mostly. 'Nuff said.

There's no music in Scorched earth, just some 1 bit shot sounds and a couple of booms. You won't be missing out by disabling it.

I'd reccomend playing Scorched Earth against a real person, because the computer opponents tend to all be "moron"s, even when you select "destroyer".

I used to think this game really WAS "the mother of all games", but that was 1995 and I was 6. It's still not THAT bad, but if you're into this kind of game you'd be better off playing Worms or that neat old one with the gorillas throwing bananas at each other.

Hands down, best game ever. I've had this game on every computer I've owned for the last 15 years.

Any chance of getting this one updated as a DosBox install, especially for us Windows 7 users?
