Company description
The 3DO Company was founded in 1991 under the name SMSG, Inc. by Electronic Arts co-founder Trip Hawkins. Their goal was to create a next-generation CD-based video gaming console. The very low $3-per-game royalty rate publishers had to pay was far below the royalties imposed by Sega and Nintendo.
The 3DO console launched in October 1993 and was well marketed, but it was priced at $700, and the promised mass quantities of games were never developed. The few games released for their system were of average to low quality, and could cost as much as $250.
The upcoming Sony PlayStation, which appeared in 1994, completely killed all hope for the 3DO platform. Soon after the PS release, 3DO changed its business to a developer of PlayStation, PC and other console games.
They acquired Cyclone Studios, Archetype Interactive and New World Computing, and continued developing games, until they filed for bankruptcy in 2003.
